No New Year’s Resolutions

Industry Insider Magazine 1999 Photo Issue (I had keep this).

This banner ran on Karmaloop in 2003. Today, Karmaloop is the leading online retailer with a store front in Boston. Greg, when you are ready to launch Karmaloop Cali, you got your man right here. Down since ’03.

My New Year’s resolutions never make it past the second week of the new year. Therefore, a better plan would be to continue doing anything I am already doing well. Stay positive. Always work towards being a better person. Try and listen first, speak after. Refine my current skill set. Acquire new skills. Think bigger. Work hard for once. I learned a lot about myself this year. I was probably only putting in 50% effort throughout the year (which was 100% more than 2008). I ended 2009 going at 150% everyday. Pure focus. Zero distractions. I’ve gotten to the point where I would wake up before my alarm clock. I don’t even set the thing on anymore. Lol. That is huge for me considering I would sleep through a deafening alarm for over an hour each morning. I didn’t care, I had no motivation and nothing to wake up for.

I had an epiphany. I couldn’t picture myself working for somebody my whole life, let alone my best years. The time is now to make something happen. I can not and should not wait around for a handout. I finally realized the only person who can put me on is myself. Now is the time to work hard and create opportunities for myself.

Through this site, I hope to attract individuals and brands who share the same passion towards design and feel we would together create stellar work. I do have a confession to make. Yes, I was that student in the design program who was a professor’s worst nightmare. I was unmotivated and had poor work ethics. I already knew what I wanted to do with my life (design) and felt that I did not need to be there.

I am glad I made an attitude adjustment towards the end and completed the program. While I would daydream I was still absorbing tons of knowledge. Now I can multitask with the best of them (TV and iTunes are both on and opened right now). I am excited to share with visitors my daily life, thoughts, inspirations, along with anything they would like to know. The million dollar ideas, well, you have to pay for those.

Daily Drop Cap by designer Jessica Hische

Jessica Hische is a typographer and illustrator from Brooklyn, New York. She is the type of designer who art directors would kill to have on their team. Not only is the work on her site amazing, the interface is a dream to navigate. I especially appreciate subtleties such the Previous/Next buttons have been programmed to take the visitor to the previous or next piece of work (set of photos) once you click on the last photo in the current set. That kind of attention to detail puts me on a good one.

I saw Jessica’s work in a Smashing Magazine article (Design Something Every Day) that included a write up on her Daily Drop Cap project. Keep it coming, you are a rock star.
